What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

If I could do it all over again I would limit their free ranging space just enough to keep my front porch & driveway bird free. My birds know that if they rush the driveway they'll get a tasty bribe to keep them out of the way. Most importantly, having chickens where visitors walk & drive is a biosecurity nightmare. Keeping them off the driveway & porch would also mean no more accidentally stepping in poop in your 'real' shoes. That alone would be like a dream come true.

There's one. Not using my yard/garden shoes and walking around in a store smelling like the chicken poo wedged in the bottom of my 'good' sneaker.

word of advice....

If you are going to pass out in the coop or run try to fall face first... because eyes is shiny.

I do that but i won't call it a mistake, I call it a blessing.. I am used to the smell and everyone else gets out of my way lol

My barn shoes and boots don't go anywhere else, because it's better biosecurity for my flock. I'm not as likely to bring anything 'ungood' back home to them.

Your way better than I could ever be. Oh I started with my “chicken shoes” then chicken slippers then chicken boots then chicken flip flops...so now the bigger question is which one of my shoes “doesn’t” have poop on them.
Today I had a
Meeting at town hall. I was horrified!!!! I looked down and there was some
Pooped covered straw on the carpet. A room full of people (35) and I got called out on it. I said “some people” and grabbed a tissue and picked it up.
I said “okay people everyone check your shoes”
Played it cool as a cucumber

Lol I have two pairs of sneakers that are both soaking and finally pulled out my muck boots/wellies. Now I'll be wearing my office flats and cutoff shorts to Tractor Supply this afternoon

For the chicken yard I use deck shoes in nice weather for their smooth soles and not picking up any feces. In inclement weather I use a pair of Bogs my daughter bought me. They are similar to muck boots, somewhat insulated and have relatively smooth soles. They've lasted me years. https://www.bogsfootwear.com/shop/index.html
A pair of cheap deck shoes usually last a little more than one season. Not bad for $15.
