What were your worst mistakes when you first started?

Pics
:D
Never made a mistake. :lau
The thread is really pretty long so I won't add another 10 pages of my mistakes. I'll just list a couple.
#1 Not finding BYC before I actually started building chicken coops and getting chickens. I have a foolish amount of money spent on various items. That now just sit up in the rafters or just thrown out. There is a wealth of information on this site that can really allow you to do things correctly the first time. I surely am one who likes to do things MY way but could of saved myself some headaches had BYC been found sooner.
#2 Putting course stone in the run in some spots, was wondering why they were getting bumblefoot, once stones taken out problem went away.
#3 Playing Vet and while wrapping a chickens foot after treating bumblefoot I accidentally wrapped her back toe into the bandage causing it to eventually die and fall off. That still makes me upset to this day. She is doing great now and still here, it is amazing how resilient these birds really are.
I could go on and on but like I said I'll keep it short.
Would also like to thank the Creator and the many contributors of BYC for having this site so that others can hopefully not have a laundry list of "worst things we first did".:highfive:
Happy New Year !!!
But...but...it could be so helpful Rooster. ;)

:frow I totally agree! I wish I'd found BYC BEFORE I set out on this path..... But then it wasn't really planned to have chickens either
It was more of a rooster rescue (saved from the pot) than a planned deal. If I'd had known sooner about BYC I would definitely have built my coop and run first... Having said that, Sir Rodger and now first polygamous wife have lived through a lot of construction specially of the run that collapsed once in 60mph gusts!
They're still living in a less intense coop and run construction zone and I'm blessed with a hubby that despite never wanting chickens has helped me tons! The now FOUR hens and Sir Rodger are enjoying life down on the farm!
I wish I'd known and understood more about rooster mentality! That was a painful lesson for both of us till I read on here recently about positive reinforcement. He's never stepped out of line since I 'attempted' to catch him but grabbing just one leg. That was enough for him! Lol
The latest is using 2"x4"s for roosts so they can keep ALL of their feet warm. So now I'm about to start with the new roosts!!
Like you, I could go on and on! Specially about help filling in a five foot dog kennel door with a regular human door cut down to fit, door frames and the rest of the space a solid wooden wall so I can put in an entry/exit with a mechanical sliding door!!! Yes, I could go on and on, but I'll stop now... :lau:lau:frow

Awwwwww that's great news :) would love to see pics of them if you don't mind posting some - I think roosters/cockerels are great, I'd have one if I could.
Absolutely! :) Maybe someday, right? :hugs
