WHAT, WHEN, and HOW to feed cracked corn?

I keep cracked corn in a metal coffee can to which I've added a wire handle to make it easier to carry. When I want to call my birds to come to me, all I have to do is shake that can and they all come running -- the chickens, ducks, guineas & geese. They know what that sound means and don't want to be late for the treat. It really makes it handy if they've gotten out of their pens before their time of recess, or if I need to catch a particular bird that's out.

The premise that the germ is simply lost during grinding is ludicrous. The grinding process occurs in a contained vessel and the germ contains the oil which will help it bind to the ground particles. If anything is lost it would be dust like particles from the starchy endosperm.

Of course the amount of dust will be different based on the particle size of the corn, the type of mill, and the maintenance of the mill.

I feed 60+ hens a mix of 60%-16% egg ration pellet and 40% corn (either whole or cracked whichever the Feed Store has at the time) daily all yr. round along with a large container of plain yogurt each sunday (this is good for digestion)

I get 60 eggs a day.

in my opion its what works best for your critters cause EVERYBODY has a different way of caring for there animals and just because its in a book doesn't mean its right or wrong. Take note of the different ideas given on here and in your books and twist it to work for your critters

As a long time formulater of my own feed mixes, my most used reference work is Morrisons Feeds and Feeding. First published in 1922, but much abridged and updated since. Pretty much the definitive work on feed mixes for a long time. Many of the modern authors have really little experience in this field, but are really good at writing.

Punent squares will get you close on simple feed mixes, but to tak advantage of multiple mixes and the nuances of Amino Acid and Energy Nutrition you might need a refernce that is just a bit more updated.

I would love to get an original copy of Morrisons for my library!

My updating is years of trial and error and observation. Go to abebooks.com a copy can be had for as little as $2.00.

The germ is NOT lost when the corn is cracked! Where do you people come up with this nonsense?

Jim

This may be where:

In sifted cracked corn the protein content is slightly lower, due to the loss of germ meal.

Interesting.

I bet the burr mills they used 100 years ago are just as efficient as the roller mills used in modern feed mills.
