what/who did this?

I bought this watermelon and when I got it home found this on the underside. One opinion is human design in nature, and one is some snail/slug or something. I do not know where it was grown. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

I have no idea what could have caused it, but I have gotten some similar tracks (not nearly as pretty though), on some zuchini.
