Built my hen house this afternoon and I fancy some Speckeldy Hens. The farm nearby however sell hens for 50, they are 18 months old and free range but they make them redundent when they dont lay an egg a day. Will the normal hens mix well with speckled? Am i better with two speckleds and one red, two reds and one speckled, or all speckleds, all reds?!

Thanks in advance

A good mixed flock is fun to watch, you can really tell them apart! Good luck!

I agree, mix it up! I like being able to tell my girls apart without too much effort.
It's also fun to get some EE's and wait to see how they'll feather out and then wait
to see what color egg they'll lay.

Fred's Hens :

In my view, "birds of a feather, flock together" is more than a cliche, but is often the case. That said, the birds make a flock, they sort it out, and most times, get along just fine in a mixed flock environment.

x2, well said Fred's Hens.

Ok Great! And thanks for all the welcomes! I think i have decided on two speckeldy and one red. The speckeldy will lay more eggs initially as they will be younger birds. It also means that i can go and collect them tomorrow
