One of the chicks survived the incident and hatched last night. It came out of an egg from my black-sex link hen, Tilly.

A third chick hatched yesterday. I was hoping it was from an egg from one of my BAs, but it’s possible I ended up grabbing another egg from my Black Sex-link. The chick does look different, though, but similar. The dad possibilities are still the same. I don’t think the chick in the leghorn egg made it. It should’ve hatched yesterday too.

Looks like two nice barred chicks. I’m glad you got more to hatch than you thought you would, mixes are always great.

If they turn out barred in any capacity, that only eliminates 3 of my roos as the dad lol. My 2 BAs & my black ameraucana. I finally gave up on the other ISA brown egg and when I opened it, the chick was fully formed. It looked like it was a day away from hatching, which lines up with them going cold for 5 hours. It would’ve been a yellow chick like the other chick that hatched from the first ISA egg. I’m probably going to give up on the leghorn egg tomorrow, it just doesn’t look like it should when I candled it.

But, yeah, this was more of a test run than anything. My BR pullet went broody and I wanted to see what kind of mother she’d be. So far she’s been very good, she sat the entire time too. The first chick hatching 2 days early just kind of threw a wrench in the flow of things.

Gave up on the leghorn egg, cracked it open and it looked like it had died around day 17 which lines up with when the eggs ended up getting chilled. It would’ve been a yellow chick with a lot of black spots in its’ down. If the incident wouldn’t have happened, I think Nelly would’ve hatched all of her eggs. I made the mistake of using a nesting box the chick couldn’t get back into once it fell out ( it was on the ground, the walls of the box were just too high. next time I’ll pile up a lot of straw and skip the box entirely)

1 WEEK OLD
  • Just a weekly chick update.

I could make some educated guesses. But they would only be guesses.
