What would be your top pick for breeding?

I’d say gamefowl but it’s too hard to find them a good home because there’s too many cockfighters. I choose ameraucanas because people want them for blue eggs, they have adorable muffs and are very sweet.

I agree with the dual purpose something I should really consider more!!!
Blue Cochins are on my list too!

I forgot to mention the amazing egg production on leghorns as well. They're not as great in the meat department, though. I'd also consider white leghorns because they're just so sweet and wonderful. (you can see my girl in my avvy)

Probably brahmas...I just love their looks!

Cochins check all those boxes for me, but I really like the columbian patterning on brahmas, and the pea combs I think look really cute on them.

Legbars! I have my breeding stock for both White and Cream already, I can't wait until spring so I can start hatching. I will be working towards legbar SOP.

@sunnie7 If you are still considering legbars, I definitely recommend them. I don't know what kind of breeding stock the guy you were talking to had, but I have found legbars to be the opposite of what he was describing. They are disease resistant and lay large eggs (they are poor winter layers though).

I had 2 black Australorps, one died, but they both layed the darkest brown eggs!!! I kept wondering if they were indeed Marans but was told no! They are very sweet and pretty girls!View attachment 2465794View attachment 2465795
