Quote:
In my opinion, the world has changed. With the advances in communication, the world is currently undergoing a revolution where even the remotest tribesman in Africa often has a cell phone and the internet is usually not far away. The genie is out of the bottle and we can't get it back in. Do we hunker down in isolationism and let the world pass us by, or do we try to guide this change in a direction we want it to go.
I'm not trying to flame people with this, but show how strongly I feel about it. The best example of an isolationist nation I can think of right now is North Korea. Go back a generation or so and it was Albania. Both are or were brutal dictatorships that survived by keeping all communications with the outside world from their people. I don't think that's what anyone on here wants for our country, but that's what I think of when I think of isolationalism.
I am a globalist in that I think we all live on one planet and we are all interlinked. ( I don't go so far as to be a New Ager where I think everything is linked. There are limits.) I think we have the best system in the world, not perfect, just better than any other. I think much of the rest of the world will not like us because they are jealous and want to be like us. I think we need to regain the moral high ground we squandered and that we should help direct the development of the rest of the world in the direction we want it to gio instead of letting the Chinese lead the way. I've seen the Chinese in action. They will lead the way by helping developing countries develop. So there's another answer as to why foreign aid. Do we want to influence the way the world develops or do want to let the Chinese and others of their ilk lead the way. I think the best way to take care of future generations of Americans is to help guide the world in the direction we want it to go.
Enough for today. I need to go can some corn.
