What would you do? Nice UPDATE

I purchased 22 eggs from a seller for $51. They were shipped on a sat and arrived on that thursday. On day 7 candling, it was clear that very few were developing. By day 18, only one appeared to develop. I had one beautiful chick hatch on day 22 and opened all the others on day 24 to find no others developed at all. Not scrambled, just not developed. I have kept in contact with the seller to let them know the progress, or lack thereof throughout the hatch.

She did ship them priority, so it is not her fault that it took 5 days to get from NY to Maine, but given that the box appeared to arrive in excellent shape (no damage, no cracks, no scrambled), I have to wonder about fertility and older eggs. She said they were fresh. If they were fresh, even 5 days should have still yielded a decent hatch if they were fertile, right?

I have asked her to send more eggs. I offered to pay the shipping. But she has not returned my email or pm.

What would you do? On either end?

Thanks.

Even if the box was in good shape, The trip form there to your house was probably a shaky one. The yolks could have been damaged from the ride over to you?

Even tho the box arrived undamaged, that doesn't mean that it was handled carefully during the shipping.

I do think she should respond to you, but I personally don't ever expect for a seller to ship me more eggs. That's the chance I take with shipped eggs. There are no guarentees.

Silkies. Like you are pipping.

I certainly wouldn't expect a refund, but it doesn't cost a seller anything if the buyer pays the shipping. And while it may or may not be on her end, it wasn't my fault either. I have a new incubator that has hatched well in the past and nothing developed. No veins, nothing, other than this one little fella. And we are both in the NE, so heat really shouldn't be an issue. It was downright chilly all summer.

I am hoping the person will contact me back and maybe be willing to send a few more, but if not, I accept it.

Hope things work out for you. I had some bad hatches to. I try during the summer and get nothing but during winter hatches I get near 100%.

Forgot to add: Sometimes the P.O. X-rays the box which makes the eggs less viable.

Good luck! Even if the box was perfect, if they sat in the back of a metal truck for middle of the day toasting at 100+ down the freeway, that too could have fried them beyond development. I bought a new thermometer and while picking up just milk at the store next door, maybe in just 10 min, the thermometer in the cabin read 120F. Any longer and I might have broken my brand new analog thermometer! It was only 80F outside. Often cold weather is better for eggs as they store their viability longer that way. Hope the seller makes a return contact.

I have had it both ways as a buyer. I got 1 egg that even developed out of 16, the seller (BYC member) offered to replace for shipping. The other was non-BYCer, First batch lots were broken, I only paid for the intact(per buyer), not the ones that developed, got 8 out of 3 dozen, second time(figured it couldn't happen twice) I paid full price for 2 dozen and only got 2 chicks. No offers for replacements, which is disheartening cuz the 2 I got weren't even the color I wanted, they were to just round out the second dozen. I also just hatched out showgirls, the seller(burntumber) offered to replace all the quitters and non-hatchers(for shipping cost) which was great ( dh thinks 6 showgirls is more than enough

). It just feels alot better when the seller will send more for shipping cost, especially when it's not their fault. Maybe the seller is out of town(long holiday weekend), but if not they really should reply. Good luck resolving this
