I bought 13 pullets a week ago, after 2-3 days I noticed them being sick, so I separated 9 of them that seemed bad and have treated them for 5 days now with antibiotics and vitamins ect. One has died and still a couple more may as well bc they don't seem to be pulling through but the other are recovering they seem. What would you do as far as trying to make it right with the seller. I spent 60 dollars at TSC on medicine the 3rd day I had then and have lost one already. I know he should atleast replace the ones that died but should I ask for more due to the money I spent trying to get them better. Also I've heard with respiratory sicknesses they can continue to get them in the future even if the bird gets better? Also do I put them back with my flock if the seem to have gotten better and I did 5 days of Tylan? When should I reintroduce them if I should at all?

I'm sorry to hear that.

First off, even if the seller was really obnoxious, stay polite and you are more likely to get answers. Ask how they could have gotten sick (so you know what it could be) and for your money back for those chicks or replacements (which may also get sick). You could also ask for them to help pay for the medical bills, and if he takes good care of his birds he/she should. However, if the person doesn't take to good care of the chicks or care, then he/she may refuse, in which case you should report them.

I would suggest sending in a blood test or something to see what the illness is before reintroducing them, as they may be carriers.

Many respiratory illnesses make the birds carriers for life. If another dies send it in for a necropsy. It would help to know what they have.

If I just cull the whole bunch then I'll loose out of 200 I just spent on the chickens and another 60 on medication. I'm going to try and see if he will refund my money and take the birds back or swap me with a new batch of pullets he got

That sucks, but disease is no respector of money spent. It can be hard to get rid of, once it is established on your place. The person that you got them from must be having a similar disease problem?

I think with that much money involved, I would get the neocropsy done, so that you know what it is you are dealing with, and if the stress of transportation and a new coop could cause it to flare up. If so, I would not want any more birds from that place.

It is entirely possible that the birds you purchased were healthy until you mixed them with your flock. If your flock is a carrier of some disease, they could have infected the new chickens.

Did you quarantine the new chickens?

With my first batch of chicks I had a sick one... Oh it stressed me out and I spent all sorts of money on medicines and stuff and she still passed

. But now I have learned if o get a sick chick I just removed them to a warm safe place... Make them cozy... Give them gaterade and just wait it out... If they die I learned that the risk to the family of hens isn't worth it... And if it's just a cold.. They usually peak up after a short bit. Being you have an entire flock sick I would try to figure that out to make sure it's not environmental and definetly have words with the seller and tell them if they rectify you will have to report them especially with the bird flu so big... We don't need it in our small home flocks. Good luck!!!! Mourn and start fresh.

They were not mixed with any from my flock, and when I brought them home I noticed one of them sitting on their feet with their eyes closed
