What would you do?

Out of a few hundred kids in my school I got got principles honor roll and I was chosen out of everyone else that got principles honor roll to go study in China over the 2010 summer break. My parents think it would be great for me to go. I hate the idea. I don't want to be away from my family for that long and of course my chickens. Plus I do not want to go to another country that barely anybody speaks english. What would you do? Stay or go?

Well, the decission is really up to you, I'd say. But, just think, how cool is that, to be able to go to China?! Give it some thought, then make your decission.

i say go its a once and a lifetime opportunity that you may never get again. family is just a phone call away and maybe you could take a video of your chickens before you leave. i think its a great way to learn other peoples culture. if i had the choice to go i would in a heart beat not like you get this choice everyday. but still its your decision.

Well, like others have said, it's up to you of course, but if it were me in that same situation I'd start packing my bags lol. How cool would that be to be able to go to China? Sure you'll be homesick for a little bit but it really does get better.

I want to say go for it... But I know that if that happened to me, I wouldn't go. I have absolutely no interest in going to China. Going to places where english is not the first language kinda terrifies me, and not going with my friends or family would have me on edge, too.

But then again, I'm a big chicken.

I'd go, but follow your heart. If you don't think you will regret it, don't do it! Not everyone is meant for travelling!!

I would have to know some things before making the decision. First of all, will you be going with a group of students your age that you will be spending daily time with? Will there be a knowledgeable person of authority going with you looking out for your well being while you are there? Does this person know an embassy contact should a serious problem arise? If the answer to any of these questions is no, I would keep my butt at home. I don't imagine that it would be a very good experience if you were just flown over there to be solely dependent upon a host family for everything and didn't know anyone. I guess the next thing is, do you really want to go?

Both of my daughters have studied abroad through their college and these are some questions that were discussed before their departure. Both of them came home with a new appreciation for the United States. The youngest is going to go back to South Africa again this summer to work with missionaries she met last summer.

Without hesitation, go! Talk about an incredible opportunity! I suspect you will end up regretting it if you don't go. The experience would be amazing. Trust me, English is spoken all over Asia. Not only that, but a lot of places even take US currency. I would not worry too much about being able to communicate. Your school is not going to send you some place where you are going to be "in trouble" with being able to communicate or not have a safe place/contact person. If you are that worried about the language barrier, learn some of the language. Don't be afraid to take the journey, even as daunting as it may seem.
