What would you do?

Companies do not pay extra for unemployment when they lay someone off---they pay that cost (unemployment insurance) in their tax withholdings payments. In other words, they pay the cost for every employee, not just those they lay off.

This morning I commented on a ismilar situation at a coffee shop we frequent. Seems that when they get good reliable employees, they start messing with their schedule and cutting back their hours for no apparent reason--we have seen them do this time and again. I do not understand it at all.

This usually happens right before a cola kicks in ,the new guy is always cheaper some are even available at training wages. depending on what state/commonwealth you are in some offer partial unemployment I have filed for it and collected every now and then usually as quick as they reduced my hours I filed. good luck with the job hunt

Good for you. There is a better job waiting for you.

I should have quit my job I had years ago at Pizza Hut when I came in for an 8am staff safety meeting, then pulled the early morning opening until 2pm. Then back again at 4pm until 9pm, unfortunately I got told 5 minutes before my shift ended I get to close up.
Stayed there til 2am.
boss gave me the next day off.
Got fired later on because a couple of the other waitresses did not like me.

I got a better job.
