Well I was outside watching the guineas to try and see what the new one was that I bought. Was hoping I bought a male. But I am thinking I bought a female. It is starting to call Not doing the buckwheat yet but the others started the same way.

So, My first silkie egg after the broody drought finally hatched! I was so excited to get a few more silkies, adn a cursory look in the brooder confirmed it wasn;t a showgirl.

...... Its a marans cross. Must have been from when I thought constance was a girl..... CURSES! I have about 15 eggs in the bator that could be these crazy chickens!

Waterer question -- I have a rabbit cage-type waterer that I've used successfully with fairly young chicks before. I put it just below the pipe with the nipples in the coop, so the little ones can reach it. A broody has some 3-4-week-old chicks in there that can't reach the nipples yet. I've put treats there and let it drip while they were nearby; I've captured a chick (no small feat) and stuck its beak in the waterer; I've let the older ones see the water dripping out of it. But when I put a water dish near it, they all (even the adults) drink out of the dish instead of the nipples or rabbit waterer.

Suggestions? I hate to just take the dish out for fear the babies won't drink.

That waterer looks awful high up for babies (I see the bottle sticking between the boards below the nipple waterer). Maybe it's the pic, but I wouldn't put a baby waterer more than about 2 inches from the ground until they get it figured out. You may need to hang it on the inside of the cage to get the no22le at the right height for a while. If it's right where they can run into it it should be easier for them to figure out since natural curiosity will get them pecking at it anyway.

Well, they're Eng Orp babies, so they're pretty huge right now.

I saw two of them grab the pieces of grass I shoved in at and above the nipple level, so I know they can reach it.

I would try hanging it inside so it's more noticeable. Could be they just aren't seeing it hidden between the boards. Maybe even try painting the end bright orange or red to attract attention.
