WHAT YA GOT SWAP Chat Thread

I have an enclosed front porch. It's practically another room. I had 4 brooders with heat lamps on them till the chicks where feathered. Then they went out in the grow pen which also had heat lamps. I burned alot of electricity last winter and don't plan to do it again this winter. Luckily we had a mild winter. If we had had an ice storm and our electric went out I would have lost nearly all of them. Thats what we get here in a bad winter. The ice takes out trees and power lines. Last one we had DH stood outside all night during the storm and watched out for our animals. The worst that happened is a tree got so heavy with ice it bend over the coop and pulled out the cord for their light. Although we lost electricity for 5 days and we had to chip our way into the coop everybody inside was just fine. We didn't have any babies to worry about that winter so all I had to do was keep out chihuahua warm. She stayed under my coat most of the time. Except to eat and potty of course. I even slept with her.

Keep me posted on how the little bird progresses; if you choose to move forward. I know this is not an easy thing to deside on. We did have to do multiple steps for the one that we did, and she spent a good amount of time on her face and gullet for a few weeks. Even when we took off the little orange pipecleaners and taped casts.... VERY clumbsy. Now she has caught up to the rest of the brood in size as well as become social in the group. She will be able to perch with the ladies in the house in about 5 weeks as well. We are looking to cut back, and trade out for new blood in a few weeks, but today is a day to collect myself, and cook up some early pumpkin and garden veggis. I had to share your wheelchair with my boys (5&11) they loved it. I wish I had thought of it a few months ago! I will remember if I have to do it again. That is AWESOME!!!!!

Great lego cart! Where is everybody at today? Will anyone be having goats milk soap and lotion for swap before Christmas? It is so cold here today reminds me of fall! thx

I usually don't incubate any eggs after the first or second week of August. If they're set that week, they'll hatch around September 1st. That gives us about a month and a half to two months before our first snow here in Michigan. That's usually long enough for our chicks to grow up enough to survive our winters.

That's true... USUALLY we don't get snow until mid-late November, sometimes not even till December, but SOMETIMES we get it in September... Although even then of course it doesn't stick, I guess really they would just need to be big enough by the time January comes, that's usually when the below zero weather hits..... hmmm... won't happen this year, but thinking about future planning=)

Gabrielle... very ingenious lego cart!! Good luck with that chick!

Look what I found in the incubator this morning

Sorry about your chicks leg. That's a great cart. I wish I had thought of it.

I had 2 Serama chicks from different hatches but the same breeder have the same thing happen. The 1st one I just figured well it happens but now the 2 nd time I think I shoud tell her. It's no one here.

Should I let the breeder know? All the other chicks have been fine and we have 1 more swap planned.

I would let the breeder know. If I sold hatching eggs from my flock, I'd want to know. If they eggs were labeled and you remember what the labels were, they'd be able to identify the pen they came from and take appropriate measures.

I read something somewhere about percentages of hatch to non, and deformities. I really wish I could remember where I'd read it. I was looking for which kinds would be handed down to the offspring when I found it... just in case someone wants to look it up. I have been having a lot of stormy weather today, and have been stuck indoors, but with the computer off most of the time.
On a different note, before I sign off.... I do think the truck will pass inspection!

This will enable me and the boys to take many birds to an auction, and get a few replacements with different blood lines. YAY!!!!
