Received my mealworm kit. They look wonderful. I have them setup, now just have to find someplace to by bran in less than 50 lb bags. LOL Last time I used oatmeal. Can I switch to oatmeal if they are currently on bran?

Excellent idea. I haven't seen any at the farmer's market; I'll have to check. Our Farmer's Coop sells it but only in 50 lb bags. It would take a lot of mealworms to eat 50 lbs. I'm not sure what else it could be used for.Yes you can, What I would do is just throw some oatmeal in with the bran so they can munch on that also. Then when you switch over they will be used to it.
Also if you have a local farm market near you like I do, You can get it for really cheap like a bag for $0.92 and I put mine in the freezer right away and get it out in a couple of days. It kills any kind of bugs that may be living in it. So you don't get any bran mites.![]()
When we were mixing our own goat feed wheat bran was a good base as what we got was 40% crude protein. Not sure what other animals you have but it might fit into their diets, raw as is or fermented. 50# of it IS a large volume, we stored it in a 55gal drum w/ lid b/c it was too big for anything smaller.Excellent idea.
