I understand the poultry may seem to be treated inhumane, that is what commercial poultry production is. The inhumane treatment of animals for profit.
The fact is, we the consumer created this situation. Many poultry consumers do not care about how their food is procured, as long as it is cheap and readily available. Being in an area with many commercial poultry operations, i see chickens packed in houses 20 to 40 thousand birds. I have also seen birds flopping around on highways that escaped from the cages of the trucks. Seeing this most of my life has made me immune from the "poor little chicken" thoughts of commercial poultry.
I agree that commercial produced poultry and products should be procured in a more humane way, but it is the money figure on the bottom line that will win.
If people really cared about where their poultry product meal came from, they would buy from local small poultry keepers like us on BYC. Please leave your comments about my thoughts, but i'm not going to respond to any argument starting posts.

If you appreciate chickens as much as I do you have to sign this petition online now. If you want to go the extra mile contact your representative. This bill is trying to make it OK to have chickens in cages no bigger than there bodies. If this bill passes then they cannot be challenged for humaine laws. We have to stop this.

And even if you go for "free range eggs" at the store, they still are packed into tiny houses at night. Sure it's an upgrade from the leghorns situation, but it's still the almighty dollar that will win, like groundpecker said. And considering what they're charging for those "Free range eggs" holy crap....lol

I am just floored at how much eggs in the store have gone up in such a short time. Not too long ago I remember eggs being under $1/dozen, somewhere between .60-.80 cents/dozen (at Aldi's). Went to Aldi's the other day and actually payed attention to eggs and was shocked to see eggs are $1.29/dozen and that's Aldi's!! I could not believe it!!!!

Aldi's doesn't carry free-range eggs so no idea where they're priced these days but not sure I even want to know??

I love my chickens and what they provide for my family.

I have 2 commercial chicken houses on my property.... a local farmer was leasing them. I have seen and smelled 40,000 per coop in my back yard. He retired 2 years ago, the houses are empty.
They were fed ,watered, had heat & air with fans but were crowded. Coops were kept as clean as expected and cleaned down to the dirt and washed out every 6 weeks, when the birds were removed.
I know my birds live like royalty compared, but these birds were not treated inhumanly. JUST MY OPINION....
Can't even fathom the amount of chickens that must be raised to feed this country.

(have written about 5 responses and decided to delete them all) I'll just say, I don't sign petitions very often, especially when they are endorsed by animal rights groups. I like cheap food and support farmers.

I respect your opinion. This petition does not stop the caging of chickens in extremely small cages. This petition is to stop the bill that will let commercial egg companies go even farther and give rights groups no opportunity to question them about what they are doing. Yes if this law was passed egg prices would go down a little, but are we really saying that it is worth our 50 cents to keep a chicken somewhere in below inhumaine standards??? Most people on BYC dont even buy eggs from commercial industries they raise chickens and get eggs from their own flock so signing would not have effected them in any way. If you need some motivation just imagine you or your chickens in cages barely big enough too hold your body...

Thankyou to those who signed. Again if you dont sign or if you have a different view I will not argue with you just make you aware that this is the right thing to do.

I know! There is a fat guy that works at the auction that does that all the time! I said to my friend, I would like to see him hung by his arm and waved around in the air to see how he likes it! And cramming that many birds in a cage to sell just drives the price down as far as I can tell. People need to get a look at what they are buying.

I guess until I have the guts to kill my own chickens to eat, I should just shut up. I agree that they could crowd them less though. I'm up in the swap, grab some goodies people and smile.

I signed it, too... btw.
