Calling Silkie experts. I need to know the sex of this silkie. It hatched on Christmas so I should be able to tell by now but i'm confused on this one. If I go by the feathers on it's head it's a girl. If I go by it's behavior it's a boy. It has never laid an egg and so far all my silkies start to lay at 6 months. It don't crow, it dont sleep with the rest, it sleeps on the floor, it perfers not to be with the others or near the roo and they pretty much stay away from it. I saw the roo breed it maybe. I have another black one that I know is a hen. She is the mother to this one. The face shot shows a light comb but it's not. It's my lousey camera. It's color is also jet black with a few irridescent feathers in the tail.

Probably a hen. Lots of silkies don't lay until 7-8 months old. I got 2 hens and a roo at the sale today to add to my silkie flock once they get done quarantine.

My original thought was a girl. I had 2 black silkies and a grey sizzle hatch on Christmas. One of the black ones I was sure was a boy so it got sold a few months ago. Noel has laid eggs already, back before it got so hot and she hasn't started back yet. I sure hate to keep changing my registration form but i'll have to let him know to change it back to a pullet. I've asked in the silkie thread also and i've gotten 3 girl votes and no boy votes.

EM - I think Pullet.........I don't see streamers from teh back of the crest. I do have a roo that did not get them until he was 9-10 months old. I had one I thought was a boy - til at 10 months old, she laid an egg!




I got my mystery box yesterday from MissRed! It was waiting on me when we got home from Chickenstock!
I can really use everything in that box!

I got: 2 dishtowels, 1 mug with rooster & house & something else around it, 3 potholders, 1 toothpick holder, and a bar of goats milk soap!

Hi All.

Made it through Irene fine. Lots of rain & wind. No major damage. Still no power......saying multiple days.

Got my table runner from 202rooster lane & my eggs from sonew.. they will be under broodies until power back up.

Off to Church then clean up at home..... be back to catch up when power is back on.

Glad you rode it out ok! Luckily it got downgraded to a tropical storm fairly quickly, so hopefully minimal damage.
There was someone who wanted silkie eggs, but I went through most of my messages and can't figure it out. Anyway, I listed them on the BSA section if anyone is interested.

Wanted to let everyone know I am wethering Irene pretty good so far but she took out my 65 x 50 pen. Out of all the trees on my 2+ acres she took the one inside the pen. I did post pictures on my thread under peafowl. I guess the birds are to be cooped up until I can figure out how to fix it? Maybe a "build-a-pen-party"!

Yes I put them all in the shed but they want out but can't
