Ok, morning rant.
Dear customes:
STRAIGHT RUN does not mean straight hens. IF I could guarantee the sex of these guys I would be charging you a lot more money! Also I am not the magic box fairy. If you are coming to buy 5 birds, have something to put them in.
(OK maybe I am the magic box fairly, but STILL)

I know I'm expecting people to know too much. I mean its easy to sex a kitten, and 90% of these guys are pets that provide a few eggs rather then farm birds, and people get attached. But its a silkie! you cant sex it unless you are both an expert and willing to kill a few by mauling them!

Id tell everyone that if I didn't think it would put them off chickens all together.
I think this with all chicks not just silkies, should of seen the look I got from the last customer, the only box I could find said omaha steaks on the side.

Wingstone, from what I understand, you can look at a LF chicken and guess without taking the chance of hurting them. but they don't sex bantams in most places because they are so fragile moving stuff around to inspect their vent can kill them. So basically my pet chicken just takes the chance and throws the damaged ones away. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because it leaves a horrible image in my head of these little day and chicks getting hurt and then getting thrown in a bag to smother to death because they were fragile.

It would be FANTASTIC if my info was 10 years out of date... Or an urban myth....

I do my best at guessing or i tell them to come back later and buy older birds if they want a guarantee, every once in awhile i run into someone that says I sold them a rooster...oops.

Try four out of five. I understood the one rooster I got out of ten birds and love him dearly, but with only five adult hens and one pullet four extra cockerels are NOT appreciated.

I tell my customers straight run on day olds no discussion. If they want pullets, then I tell them they will have to wait until they are older then always tell them that they will cost more. I have actually had people think they are going to come back and get half grown pullets for the price of a day old chick. Gosh, wouldn't all of us love that deal.

I have young Cream Legbars and Rhodebars so next year I will be able to offer sexed chicks on those breeds since they are auto-sexing.

I see you are looking for side swaps. I have all colors of Orpingtons with some pure 100% English in Lavender, Black, Golden Laced, and Blue. I also have some interesting Orpington projects going on right now: Birchen, Lemon Blue, Crele, Wheaten. All of our birds are being somewhat lazy currently and many are free ranging for the summer so I don't have any eggs to swap now but maybe we can work something out for fall or next spring. I am interested in your quilts.

I don't even try to sex mine when they are young. And I never sell just hens and leave my boys lonely. It is very hard to sell the boys. If someone is looking for just hens I send them away. I always have way more roos than hens. Unless it is my breeding stock I am selling. People need to understand that it isn't all hens that hatch out. That it is more roos than hens always. Si=o I sell in pairs unless I have more hens available on the occassion I can sell trios.

I know with the boxes right. If I am going to buy any animals I will bring an extra box or 10 just in case, :D. You never know what else they might have that you need. DH has gotten to the point he just grabs 2 more boxes and stuffs them in the trunk whenever we are going to pick anything up. ;) I guess he figures if you can't beat them join them.

I am lucky I have a friend who takes all my extra Roos so I tell my customers to buy 2x as many chicks as they want hens and just bring me back the Roos. I have yet had anyone bring a roo back. :p
