I bought a rooster about 3 or 4 years ago that was lost in the mail for a week. I called every post office that he should have passed thru and left messages with them all to call me upon his arrival. I got a call at 1 am that he was at a po an hour drive away. I told them to hold him that I would pick im up. Poor guy was traumatized and turned mean. After about a year I had to rehome him to keep my grandkids form getting hurt. I've had eggs on a few occassions take 2 weeks to get to me.

I've gotten all my other swaps except that one but maybe it'll show up one day soon
I got chicks just this week shipped Express mail from Ohio to Colorado. They were mailed on Tuesday and I was able to get tracking to Denver when they arrived around 7am on Wednesday morning. Since I have had a lot of chicks shipped to me, I am pretty knowledgeable about the timing and route they take to Colorado Springs. I generally try to get them in Colorado Springs instead of adding another day for them to arrive at my home post office.

Anyway, the mail is trucked from Denver to Colorado Springs and express mail arrives twice a day once at around 9am and then again around 2:30pm. I am generally called to see if I want to pick chicks up once they are in Colorado Springs. When I didn't get a call by 4pm, I called the Colorado Springs general mail facility and asked them to check to see if the chicks were there. The person who answered the phone asked for the tracking number then read to me the same information that I got online. I explained that I had good reason to believe that the were at the facility and just not scanned in. She said it wasn't possible and gave me some goofy explanation about the mail being flown to my home post office and then when I told her that was not likely she gave me 1-800 number to Express Shipping and said they may have additional information.

I called the number and got a young man that was located somewhere in the country and had no ideal about the distance from Denver to Colorado Springs (about 50 miles or about a 1 hour drive). I explained how the mail is generally processed and moved and he said he would look to see if he could get additional information. He was able to tell me that the package left Denver at 8am and said that from what I told him that the chicks were likely in Colorado Springs.

Since I work in Colorado Springs, I was already in the Springs so I went to the general mail facility, waited in line for 30 minutes until I was able to talk to a clerk. I explained about the chicks, the scanning, the phone calls and he said he didn't hear any chicks at the post office. I said they came in Express and was likely back in the Express mail area. He then said he would check and walked off saying here chicky, chicky, then was back in a minute or so saying nope no chicks here. Since I have been throughout that entire facility, I knew that there was no way that he went to the Express mail area which was at the far rear of the the huge building in a minute. I asked if he could, please call the Express mail area to which he said no, I asked if he could check with the dock and he said no. I asked can you go back to the dock and he said they were not allowed to. I said well then I will go to the dock myself to which he just smiled and said can I help who is next.

I drove around to the dock area which the general public is not suppose to be in but since this wasn't the first time I had go to the dock I knew that you just had to hit the buzzer on the gate and it would open. Once I parked, I walked up to the people entry and again rang the bell and when no one answered in about 5 minutes I just walked in and flagged down the first worker I spotted. Thankfully, he was a very nice guys and agreed to help me. We stopped at the office area and he asked if anyone had seen some chicks and a couple of the people said oh this must be the chick lady. I took it from that comment that the clerk must have called back to let them know I was headed that way. None of them knew anything about chicks, so the nice worker said come on let's go back to Express mail. Once we got there, some guy popped out of the office and looked like he had been woke from a nap. I asked did he have any chicks back there and he said yea I think there are some over in this bin and sure enough there was my chicks.

I asked how long they had been there and he said they just came in and he had not had time to scan them yet. I said from them leaving Denver this morning at 8am and you are telling me they have been on a truck all day. He just stared at me because he knew they had been there since morning and he was just to lazy to do his job. I told him get these scanned out right now and I was taking them with me. He said he couldn't scan them that I would have to take them back up to the clerks. I lost it and refused to take them back up front and asked the nice post worker to show me the way back out to the dock. I grabbed my chicks and off we went. I half expected someone to call the police or stop me but I made a get away with my chicks. All chicks were in great shape which I don't think would have been the case if they had sat there until the next morning to be delivered to my home post office.

The whole kicker was that even though express says one day, the post office did not guarantee until the next day at 3pm which was 2 days and several of the people at the post office pointed this out to me. It was like why are you so upset since it is not guaranteed until tomorrow. Oh, well if the chicks are dead but you will get your package by the guaranteed time.

I hate the postal service....not meant to offend anyone.
I got some chicks mailed express this week. I work nights so I cam home and took a nap, then figured I would be up to hear the phone ring or whatever. I got up, no phone call, mailman had come, left me some packages on my step like he usually does. No chicks. I looked up online, said they were attempted to be delivered, and notice was left. No notice on my door or in my mailbox. At this point, I am thinking the address is wrong, and where are my chicks?!?!?! I went to the post office. Luckily they were there, I didn't have the trouble you do, they were nice. But still....they didn't attempt to deliver them, my mailman knows I am the crazy chicken lady....he would even wake me up for chirping chicks I think. But something happened... glad I knew they were expected to arrive that day....

I feel their advertisements are fraudlent. It should be against the law to advertise that express mail is over night or priority is 3 days guaranteed then when somebody don't get their stuff they back step themselves and say oh express has up to 3 days and priority has up to 5 days. Then they'll only refund the postage and if the mail is insured they will only insure what the buyer paid for what was in the box and that includes a bunch of paperwork that alot of people would just rather say the heck with it. I have a swap that was mailed out friday before last and I still don't have it. It hasn't been scanned since it was taken to the po. If it where eggs or a live animal I would have been having a fit by now.

My PO knows when I have a package for me and I don't answer the door where to leave it depending on the weather and my mail lady is very nice. When there is a problem they are on top of it. I just haven't taken the time to report my package missing. It seems since I got the grandkids I can't get a new routine going. About the time I think things are running smoothly something comes up and throws it all off again,

I'm sure the PO is the cause for the lack of egg sales. Last year I was shipping out 4 and 5 boxes a week and now I might get a couple out then none the next week. Lazy hens don't help any either. Mine seem to lay really good in cooler weather.

My home post office are really nice also. They also know about my eggs and chicks. I had my mailman call me this morning from the post office telling me I had a package of eggs and asked if he should bring them out since he didn't want to leave them in the box with freezing temps if I wasn't going to be home.

My pure breed hens are being really lazy but the girls that are out free ranging are still laying really good. Kind of wish it was the other way around since I can only sell eating eggs for $2.00 a dozen. I shouldn't complain or I will have to buy store bought eggs.

FYI, all mail locations have a head postmaster. This person is paid alot of money for things to run smoothly. So if you have a problem ask to talk to the postmaster.

Also, if you have continued problems contact your local office of your senator and/or congress representatives. This is the United States Postal Service. The government does still have some say in the snail mail company but you would be surprised how effective it is make elected representatives aware of problems with their organizations. You will not see the respresentative but they have lots of staff that do nothing but hand constituant's concerns.

I totally agree with false advertising by the USPS and their priority and express mail. Maybe we should all be contacting our state attorney generals and having them investigate the false advertising.

Clearly USPS is my soap box. I get so tired of them saying it will be there and it isn't.

That is a great idea. There are people all over this country that have jobs just to draw a paycheck. They take no pride in what they do. They do as little as they can get away with to not get fired at least till they can draw an unemployment check. I keep telling my grandsons to take pride in what they do, do it right the first time and you won't have to go back and do it over or somebody else gets stuck doing what your suppose to do to clean up what you didn't do. I had a boss once that always said 'Don't sweat the small stuff", He was right. Everything works out in the end. It's the bigger things to worry about or do something about. The small stuff will follow suit. Just like the PO issue we all have. If we all contacted out state reps we may just get something done about the postage issues. Those lazy people in the PO can always be replaced with people that appreciate their jobs and want to do it right to keep their job.

We just got a survey in the mail today from the USPS. They want to cut the hours of our local PO to 4/week day or close it down completely and use a contractor to provide services. IMO it is not the small local POs that are the problem - it is the large sort centers and contractors they already use. From the letter this sounds like it is going to be the trend across the country as the PO tries to cut costs.

USPS is holding a meeting at our city hall on Nov. 13 to talk about this POST Plan as they are calling it. So, I have this wild, grassroots, Save-the-Local-PO idea. I would love it if you all could write up your experiences with sending packages through the PO. Specifically how helpful your local PO is (this probably pertains to the small town POs most) and how frustrating the tracking system and delays at the large sort centers are (printing out the tracking info from their site would help if you can do it). Also letters and pictures about smashed packages. Please send them all to me before Nov. 13 and I will present them all to the Review Coordinator at the meeting. I am also toying with contacting my local and state representatives and the media to see if they would like to be at that meeting to get a copy of "what is wrong with our postal system". I really would like to hit them with both barrels at this meeting!

Please include your name and address (or at least city and state) on the letters.

I would love to flood them with boxes of letters. I think I am going to start a thread probably in the Random Ramblings section to hopefully get more BYCers involved. What do you think - can you guys help me out with this?

Here's the thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/714216/do-you-have-a-usps-shipping-story

Please send to:
I'll be getting a PO box to do this so my address isn't all over the internet - write your letters and stay tuned.

I'll help. I don't get many packages with eggs but I send them so maybe those people will also help. I do get lost packages and I keep my receipts where i send eggs i can go back and track them and print out the late ones.

Walli, I had to laugh when I saw your "Kentucky Highway!" Hillbilly Highway sounds more like it!

I will see if I can help too, but I have never gotten a smashed box. Our post office is great, and we must have a good sort center in Cincinnati.
