What your chickens can and can't eat!

Pics
I'm so confused about amaranth - I grew a few plants around the coop and dried the seeds so they could snack on them. they enjoy the greens too. is it really bad?
No, it is not bad. Both amaranth seeds and amaranth greens are edible for chickens. Some studies have shown each has done as well as some more conventional ingredients in a feed mix.

Probably raw mouse is super fresh, while raw meats are not and have plenty of time to accumulate bacteria?
Except that is not necessarily true.

If someone is butchering an animal, and tosses scraps to the chickens while they work, those scraps will be fresh (some people do this.)

And the list does not have any warnings about mice or rodents needing to be fresh. Someone could easily set traps, then take the dead mice out of the traps and give them to the chickens (so the mice would probably have been dead for some hours, or longer, at that point.)

If the issue is how long the creature has been dead, the list should say that.

I have read in other lists like this that oatmeal both cooked and raw is not good. Also, the chicken chick (if you are familiar with her) says it's a NO. Just my 2 cents.
And that plus her saying gasoline kills scaly leg mites is why I stopped going to her site for any information whatsoever.

I read that sunflower seeds are not good for chickens. also strawberry tops
Sunflower seeds ARE good for chickens for more than the protein. They are high in Vitamin E and Selenium, so most of those of us with silkies who are prone to wry neck make sure ours get some in their diet. They are high in fat too if they eat too many though.

Chicken Football. One of our chickens spies a dead mouse, mole, or vole that one of the cats left in the yard. They look both ways, then grab it and take off running as fast as they can. The rest of the chickens give chase and try to catch up. The one in front with the mouse zig zags trying to lose the pack behind them. It's exciting to watch to see who ends up with it, but I don't eat eggs for a week after that.

Where? Sunflower seeds are great for them, strawberry tops are just fine. Of course you don’t want to overdo ANY treats.

I think that’s being a bit too nit-picky about what this list was supposed to be. Most people buy their meat at the store and might be freaked out when they see their chicken kill and eat a mouse.
