What's 4 H all about anyway?

I feel ignorant. I thought I kinda had an idea what 4 H does, but the more I think about it I don't know.
I would like to get my 6 yo dd in it at some point.
What do they do? Is it like girl scouts or boy scouts?

Any info would be wonderful!

Its almost like boyscouts/girlscouts. But the main point it has is to teach kids to have responsibility, make good habits, and all that good stuff. It is a great activity that I would recommend for your child. But it's not just about farming and animals either. Its about helping out with the community, being kind and charitable, and its a great socializing event

Ok this is what I thought it basically was all about.
We thought about having her join Girl Scouts and while I am sure she would enjoy it I think she would enjoy 4 H more.
Jeepers, it's seems like years ago there were kids I knew who were in 4 H. I wonder if it's becoming a thing of the past (how sad if true) or if I just don't know anyone in it.

Hey there... I just looked into it recently for my 9 yo DD. What I found out is that it follows the school year (at least here in CA), so if you are hoping to have her join, you may want to move quick since school is starting. In our area, they have lots of different things like photography, cake decorating, livestock, poultry, rabbits, quilting, etc... Some of it is for older kids, but lots for the younger ones too...

The great thing about 4H is that there seems to be something for every kid out there... Horses, goats, cows, poultry, crafts, cooking, etc. I did horses with crafts on the side. I really didn't want to do crafts but my friend's mom was the head of it.

I was in 4H for years, and was really active in it until Pony Club took over my life. Anyway, now my oldest son has joined 4H as a Cloverbud or junior member. I am so excited!!! To me, 4H teaches kids the kind of leadership skills and personal responsibility that they need to grow into amazing human beings. I also love the fact that the elder kids (High School age) run the meetings. It sets a great example for the younger ones. In our area 4H is going strong, and there are over 60 kids in our club alone!!!

Our county extension rep just ordered our 10 yr old DS a Poultry program for 4H...We missed the first meet because the rep sent us the wrong flyer, no prob tho we'll be at the next meet...It's really all cattle and swine here so this is going to not only be new to us but to the county extension rep as well. I read the cattle projects book this summer and it is filled with progressive assignments and activities.

Check with your county extension office. They might have a website, and ours has a listing of all the clubs in the area..

I was in 4-H years ago. Lots of learning and fun.

I feel that with 4-H there is or should be much more parent involvement than with Girl Scouts. Susan

when i was in as a kid it was a big group thing, in a farm community many of the kids belonged. I did cake decorating, sewing and macrame, my sister did cake decorating, macrame and pigs. A couple years ago my youngest got into it but now its more of an individual thing on most of it. There are pony clubs and livestock but not the big group thing i remember.
