What's Best Breed Dual-Purpose Plus small comb

What is the best breed that has a bit of meat on it and lays, i.e. a good dual purpose bird. But... it has to have a small comb. The reason for the small comb being that we are having a lot of frost bit issues up here in Canada, even with an insulated coop with heat lamps on.

Rhode Island Reds are a good duel puropse bird and I know there are some with rose combs. Rose combs are less prone to frostbite.

Have you thought of your native heritage breed, the Chantecler?

I would think Chantecler sp? as they are native to Canada anyway.

It sounds like the "Buckeye" might be a good choice for your area.

Buckeyes would be my bet!! Can't wait to start that project this Spring! Checkout the Buckeye thread. Those guys can answer all of your cold weather questions. I choose them for their ability to be a dual purpose bird. Good luck in your search!!

Have you considered Wyandottes? McMurray has a good description. My whites filled out well and they are certainly cold hardy.
