I used construction sand with paper towels on top for a few days. The sand is easy to clean, think cat litter box, and they love to dust bath in it. Sand also stays warm and does not get yucky when wet.

I wouldn't use play sand because it typically contains chemicals, but construction sand is fine. If you can find construction sand, I would use that.

Play sand is super fine construction sand is coarse so it works better. I use a cat litter scoop to clean up the Brooder
Also have nipple waterers so it is pretty clean and easy

I start out with paper towels and then at about 2 weeks, I switch over to pine chips.

Pine shavings (horse bedding) from TSC or a place like that. Make sure they aren't small little bits. Buy the bigger ones otherwise they'll try to eat them. Obviously that's not good.
