I've decide that I want to get a rooster, but I can't decide what breed to get. We've decided on four breeds and I wanted to know from experience or knowledge which one is best. I want to know information about there aggressiveness and if they are just good rooters. The four breeds are as following: Light Sussex, Australorp, Wyandotte or Plymouth Rock.

I've only had experience with the Plymouth Rock rooster on that list, but he is the most amazing rooster ever. He is gentle towards his hens, respectful of me, protective, strong, healthy, and while he showed some aggressive behavior as a teen, when he became the top rooster he has since never shown any aggression towards me.

Australorps are suppose to be nice as well.

We have narrowed it down to a Sussex or a Australorp and was wondering what would be recommended?

This is a tough one and you will definitely get different opinions from BYC members. I've had both breeds over the years and they are both wonderful breeds with similar qualities. Both breeds are beautiful, cold hardy, and calm and gentle. My children made lap pets of both breeds. Personally I would give a slight edge to the Australorps as they are more heat hardy (which may or may not be a consideration where you live) and the superior layers (Sussex are good layers, but Aussies are exceptional layers). Which ever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Both are amazing! I love the color of the Speckled Sussex and they are friendly, but I hear Australorps are hardier, very friendly as well as a nice color of black that shimmers in the sun.
