Whats broody?

I have another question while im still here, what does gone broody mean?

It means that then hen lays her eggs (called a clutch) and sets on them to incubate them so that they will hatch into babies. It's sorta like pregnancy in live bearing animals.

it's when a hen stops laying eggs and wants to sit on the nest all day to hatch them.

Broody is a term used when a hen has laid a certain amount of eggs (her clutch) and then wants to sit on them to hatch. Some breeds are more prone to it than others. The hen will sit on the eggs for approximately 21 days until the incubation period is up, then raise the chicks for another 4-8 weeks, depending on the hen. Also, when you go to pet her or get near her, she will puff up and "growl" at you. Sometimes they may even peck you (really hard!), though my first broodies this spring would always let me touch them. They will also get up about once a day or every couple days to eat, drink, and make one big stinky poop! (trust me.. its like a bomb went off

) She will also not lay during this period.
