We have four 10-month-old pullets who are finally getting underway production-wise. My wife and I were doing some yardwork today when she called me over to look at something on the ground by our fence. At first we both thought it was a used condom (gross, I know) and that maybe someone walking by on the road tossed it over the fence into our yard (even grosser, I know). It hadn't been there a minute ago when I had been in that area of the yard. My wife grabbed a stick to pick it up and get it away from our chickens when we realized it was something else. The general gooeyness that had originally made us think we were dealing with a condom was actually more like egg white. My wife had already tossed the thing over into our garbage area away from where the chickens could get it, and when I picked it up again (now all covered with dirt) it felt like the material of a plastic bag. But this definitely came out of one of our chickens' vents.
Ordinarily I'd think this was just a little hiccup as the young birds really start getting into laying for the first time, but combined with the other oddities we've experienced this month I'm wondering if I should start worrying.
On March 6th I found egg white and yolk in our nesting box: no shell. I posted about it (with photos) here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...-egg-a-shell-less-egg-something-else.1448956/
Then on March 14th I found what seemed like a rubbery, deflated egg shell with nothing inside. I posted about it (with photos and video) here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/hen-laid-just-a-withered-deflated-empty-shell.1450660/
Now, today, March 21st, I've got this. It's become a weekly ritual to find some weird egg issue, it seems. I have no idea who has been doing these oddities, or if it's even one chicken. Might be a different chicken each week. But, although, is this something I should be worried about?
