Hello,

I have been having some troubles with one of my baby chickens. As of yesterday they have been very weak. I fist noticed they were weak was when I placed all of my chicks outside to play, but all my buff orpington would do was slowly walk up to my leg and lay against it.

Its eyes had been shut most of day up to that point as I have been having a problem with all my chicks pecking at each others eyes, it had done this the day before so I just assumed their eyes still hurt. I fed it some water and they started to open up their eyes again.

I thought it was fine but I kept holding it the rest of the day and after a whole day of looking after it and trying to find out what was wrong it had gotten worse. Now it walks backwards won't open its eyes at all, it won't eat or drink without me having to help it, all it wants to do is warm up/sleep and they have started throwing up the food I gave I'm afraid this is the end for it, since I was too slow to help.

Other details are that its having a hard time going to the bathroom and its bum is swollen, although I think its swollen bum may have been a result of the other birds pecking at it, since I saw them do it to him when the eye pecking was starting.

I have fed him sugar water, regular water and raw egg yolk for the past while now.

If anybody needs anymore information just ask, I really don't want to see this bird die and even if they do, I want to know what I should have done differently just incase this happens to my other birds as well.

A little of an update, right now the chick is livening up. They finally opened up their one of their eyes a little bit, their chirping a lot more and when I give them water they actually try to drink it. They are still really wabbly when they stand up, but their getting stronger.

The only thing I'm unsure of doing now is what to feed them, they are not quite that interested in food right now, but they have less than half an egg yolk in their stomachs right now. They threw up earlier too. I don't know whether to feed them more yolk, wait till they want to eat their feed or feed them something else. I'm thinking I'll wet some of their feed so they can drink it instead.

Sorry about you chicks. :hugs
When they throw up, is it a clear liquid? How are you giving them the water? I find chickens tend to throw up when they drink to much.
Any abnormal droppings? The lethargy makes me think coccidiosis is a possibility. It wouldn't hurt to treat them with Corid.
How old is the chick? Are they still under a heat source? If so, how warm is the brooder? Too warm can cause constipation, which could be the cause of the strain and swollen rear end.
You could try feeding them chick starter mixed with water, or boiled egg chopped up finely. Mine enjoy that.

The liquid is yellow from the egg yolk they ate, I may have fed it too much. I'm giving them water by holding a cup of it up to their beaks.

Thinking about it, their dropping have been almost exclusively liquid, but I think that's just because that's all I've been feeding them. They did make large droppings yesterday, but they weren't odd other than the amount they made.

I think the chick is 2 weeks old, I got them form my parents so they'd probably know, but from looking at images of two weak old chicks and them my chick, I think their 2 weeks. I'll update if I'm wrong.

I don't own a brooder. Right now the chick has been in my lap, wrapped in a blanket, with a heating pad over it. I may take it off for a second to see if that will let the chick relive itself at all.

Other details I've noticed is that the chick is sneezing a lot and that it had a very very small amount of past on its behind, but enough that it seemed to be shut, I cleaned it and now it seems to be a tiny bit better, but still far from itself.

Thank you for the advice, I'll try feeding it chicken starter with water.
