What's he worth?

I've been thinning out my flock. Most of the birds I've sold or given away were just a few weeks old. I don't think I charge enough most of the time. People ask me how much I want,& I always say just throw me a couple of bucks. This particular bird has to be shipped from NY to Florida. I wanted your opinion as to how much I should charge for him.(He's 4 months old) I'm assuming shipping will be around $20, but I'm not really sure yet. Is he worth the shipping cost even? Is there not a single Self Blue OEG in Florida? Why would the buyer want one from NY? He is my only extra roo that color. Would you ship him? If so how much would you charge?

I don't know how much too charge but yes my friend has like a trio or two of self blues and she's in Ocala, Fl (same as me) so yes there is some in FL

I'm not saying this is the case in your current situation, but be aware there is a widespread scam wherein someone from Far Away sez they want to buy your <whatever> that's for sale, and are happy to pay your price plus shipping, but then they wire you an "accidental" overpayment and ask you to refund some of the difference and soon what with one thing and another you discover that the wire was counterfeit and you've just given them perfectly good money out of your bank account, sometimes with account information attached.

It is fine as long as payment arrives by means of *exact correct amount* but if there is an accidental overpayment, report it to the police and walk away.

When I sell a chicken of any sort, it's "Cash Only, Local Pickup Only".

There 2 reasons for that- one is to avoid the money scams, the other is that shipping is rough on grown birds. Not to mention you have to add in all the time and hassle in shipping it. I like to get a look at whoever buys my birds, though I mostly give them away.

If you do ship him you will need to buy a USPS approved bird box. Then check with them as far as cost.

I saw a post just the other day where someone got a roo shipped from 3-4 states away and it was over $50.00.

You haven't given the details of the transaction, but I recommend thinking long and hard about it, and as Pat says, if they pay you anything other than the EXACT amount, forget it. Don't fall for the old tip or "pay my driver" scam!

Thanks for the advice. I didn't want to send a live bird threw the mail. I thought it would be to much stress on him traveling alone. I would feel terrible if he didn't make it. I think I'll contact the buyer, and back out of the deal. It will be better for everyone that way. I'm sure the buyer can find a Roo in Florida. My birds don't really like the heat that much anyways. There acclimated to northern weather. Thanks again!
