Yesterday I found our first egg in one of our sheds. The air pocket (what is that called?) at the top was quite small (smaller than most of our store bought eggs, anyway), so it couldn't have been there very long (one to three days at most). But it doesn't look like a 'normal' egg inside. There are some spots on the yolk, and something blackish in the whitish cordlike thing (chalazae?). There is a little bullseye thing on the yolk, too. Is it fertilized? I didn't think our cockerel was old enough, and I haven't seen him trying to breed with the girls. They're all only eighteen weeks old.

Roosters can get the job done at about 16 weeks old, so it is possible that it is fertile. Sometimes the hen will lay an egg with a blood spot on it and it is not fertile.

Thanks, guys! Guess it is 'normal,' then.
