Hey Everyone,

Here in Hawaii we don't have any kind of Poultry Show, except a gamecock show on the Big Island. I've never even been to a Poultry Show, so I don't know what goes on, or what is won. Here on Oahu we have a Farm Fair for the 4-H kids, but they mostly show their stock to sell to the highest bidder. The poultry pens are usually only 5 pens, and one is dedicated to baby chicks that are incubated to hatch the day of the fair. There's usually some kind of judging, because a lot of the animals have ribbons next to their names.

What kind of information do I need to get one started up? Is there a site anywhere? What kind of labor, supplies, people, accommodations, etc. would I need as well? Would the judges need to be flown in from APA or SPPA? How many judges are needed? What are the prizes like? How much does a show like this cost? What kind of fundraising goes on to put one on? How much time goes into creating an event like this?

Thanks so much!

Hi I was also looking for poultry shows on Oahu..there was the ewa bird show that happened not too long ago,not too much chicken mostly pigeons. Was a good turn out lot of ppl and kids. I have never been to a poultry show and would like go and show some of my birds:)..

I've not found any organized poultry shows (other than for game birds) on Oahu either. You'd think there would be shows or groups for BYC keepers -- I've noticed increased interest and beginner keepers popping up.

We're certainly in a unique situation due to our location. I've been looking for clear information about what's allowed with ordering hatching eggs from the Mainland - what's the process? What questions or certs or licenses should we be asking potential sellers for? What does Hawaii State Gov require? I found an old state memo on the subject, but the form it mentioned wasn't attached to the doc, and I haven't been able to find it with search for the form # and title the doc used. What is a NPIP certification? What are the rules for keeping BYCs here in Hawaii.

There's one (awesome) hatchery on Oahu that I know of, and maybe a couple farm supply stores you can order day-old chicks from the mainland through. I'm grateful we have these sources, but frankly limited sources means limited variety and costs tend to be high!

I checked and couldn't find a 4-H extension with poultry support service. Seriously - is the 4-H and the FFA organizations I knew from my kid days a thing of the past in Hawaii? -- on Oahu anyway?

I see junior high boys walking with roosters tucked under their arms...game bird roosters -- but I don't see pet Silkies or Frizzles getting the same pampering. We're not doing ourselves or our young'uns any good if we don't get organized to share what we know and support each other.

By the way, entirely by chance I discovered campho phenique is miraculous for treating wet pox on a chicken. One morning I found one of my young birds with a runny nose, coughing, and miserable with yellowish sores in its mouth. I thought for sure I'd lose it- so took the chance of using a cotton swap dipped in campho phenique to dab on what was clearly a painful condition. I figured it would at a minimum numb the sores - like it does for cold sores. I checked on it in the early afternoon, prepared to dab it again just to keep it comfortable -- what I found was a completely cured bird!!! Now that was my first experience with any type of illness in my birds - and I haven't been able to prove my hypothesis, but if anyone has tried this treatment for pox or the condition I described (canker sores) did it work?

And if this is already a well known cure in poultry keeping circles - and I just happened to trip over it on my own - then that just reenforces why we need an organization, group or club for poultry keepers on Oahu to share knowledge and information.

Your thoughts?

Hi Patricia,

I actually inquired about the Hatching Egg permits to the HDOA(Hawaii Department Of Agriculture). I used to send for hatching eggs all the time about 10 years ago. One day I decided to start hatching again, so I bought some off eBay. They never got shipped, and I received a notice saying that if I ship in eggs again there will be a penalty fine, and possibly prosecution!! They sent the same letter to the guy who shipped the eggs. We both didn't know about this new law!

Here are the required permits you'll need to import eggs:

1. IMPORT PERMIT from the Plant Quarantine branch (808) 832-0566 (except chickens)
2. POULTRY & BIRD IMPORT PERMIT from the Livestock Disease & Control Branch (must be affixed to crate being shipped in) Call (808) 837-8092 or [email protected] 14 days BEFORE ARRIVAL
3. HEALTH CERTIFICATE or NPIP REPORT OF SALES issued within 10 days. This will have to be provided by the seller. All eggs must come from NPIP Safe flocks. Which means the flock has been tested for Pollurom-Typhoid and is monitored.

Eggs cannot be sent direct-to-home or post office. They must be picked up at the Honolulu International Airport (except chicken hatching eggs)

i've always wondered about shows too...maybe we could just setup like monthly meets at a park somewhere

Aloha.
My name is Cameron and I am a team member for the Ewa Bird Show. I am not here to promote our show but our event was started because of a lack of a poultry show.

We do have a major pigeon show, but we are trying to get a larger Chicken entry.

June 2012 we had under 20 chickens shown. Game, Fancy and Utility breeds were judged by Dr. Cordell Chang.

November 2012 we had over 50 birds shown and pride ourselves with 10 Keiki exhibitors

Our next show is June 22 and will have a larger amount of Fancy and Utility breeds being shown by Backyard friends.

Please join us as we Get our children Off their computers and into the Backyard with Chickens...

I hope there will be another Poultry show here on Oahu, so we can go as participants, but for now on the Leeward side, we are the only show.

www.EwaBirdShow.com for more updates. Please come, it's Free to enjoy a day under the trees in Ewa
