I have 2 golden comets in my first flock and they're both so grumpy! I bought them because I had read that they were very sweet and quiet, but that seems to be true only for people. They're the ones I go for when friends' kids come over and want to pet a chicken, but they won't let any of their flock mates within a foot of themselves. I'm not looking forward to the problems they'll inevitably have and I love all my heritage breeds, so I think the production hybrids are out for me.
I love, love my speckled sussex roosters. They're my first ones and they're still under a year old so I'm sure there's time for them to get grumpy but for now they're very kind to the girls, respectful of my space but not fearful, and watchful of strangers/potential predators. They have watched me poke/push away the golden comets when they do something nasty to the other girls in front of me and now they get after them for it too! The only thing I worry about is how protective of their eggs they are... I have to be sneaky about collection because they do get very upset. One likes to hang out in the nest boxes and call to the girls to tell them to lay more eggs now, right here please. They just come check him for snacks and leave.
