I have a sweet little White Crested Black Polish who is making weird noises. At night when it's quiet I can hear what sounds like static or a piece of wood burning coming from her body. She doesn't appear to be in any pain but I don't like the sounds of this. Could it be worms or something else in there?

It sounds like she may have a respiratory infection. Is she sneezing or coughing? You may want to check into Infectious Bronchitis. According to our disease book it states that breathing noises are more noticeable at night while the birds rest. Affected chickens will be chirping, with a watery discharge from the eyes and nostrils, and labored breathing. If she doesn't show any of these signs it is not bronchitis. It could be something as simple as dust blowing around. Is she eating, drinking, laying eggs? What about her stools? Are they normal?

It's not her breathing. The noise is coming from her body. She's almost a year and a half old and seems healthy except for the crackling noise. I first noticed it about a month ago.

I don't think she has any control over the noise. I notice it when I'm saying goodnight to the girls and she's on her roost - eye (and ear) level to me. It's pretty creepy.

We have two hens who do that. It is their breathing. It doesn't always seem like that, but that's what it is. It's a weird crackling noise (just like bronchitis can sometimes get in people). And it gets worse during hot, dry, dusty weather. Both have been that way for months. Neither one has shown any other symptoms. They both seem happy as can be and run all day with the others. And they are free range and run all over the place. None of the others have shown the symptoms. It is a bit more noticeable at night. It could be dust...or possibly something else which is taking a long time to materialize. I am going to try some organic apple cider vinegar in the water, and just watch. There are so many things it could be, we decided not to panic about it yet.
