i love it too...

they really do have a bad rap... at one time our city was trying to ban all bully breeds... my neighbors and i got together to fight for them... just because some irresponsible pit bull owners wouldn't take care of their dog right, and he got out a couple of times scaring the mail man... idiots... it was a hard two months, but we got them to forget about the ban...

i also love shows like the dog whisperer and pit bulls and paroles... show's just how gentle power/bully breeds really are and should be if raised correctly...

Totally new to this chicken and dog business but I do know a little bit about dogs. Your first consideration should be what dog is best for your family and your lifestyle. The chickens may not always be there. What size dog are you willing to deal with. The larger the dog the more difficult it will be to bathe and groom at home. Do you want to rely on others for this task. When this dog gets older and has difficulty getting around do you have someone to help you get him in and out of the car, tub etc. Will you be able to take a large dog with you on vacation or will you always have to board it. How much time are you willing to devote to cleaning up after this dog. Shedding and allergies should be considered. Most importantly is ease of training. I have always loved German Shepherds, and owned a beautifull female for 13 years. She developed severe spinal arthritis and had difficulty getting around. Bathing her in the house was quite impractical so I had to take her to work with me. I work at a Veterinary Hospital. She was extremely easy to train but I spent a great deal of time vacuming. I love large dogs but wanted to be able to take my next dog with me on vacations, the pet store, friends etc. without it being a major ordeal. I decided on the Poodle. I have two miniature poodles now and couldnt be happier. They were the easiest dogs to train I ever had and I have had a few. Some may argue about the cost of grooming but if you go with a sporting clip it will last you quite a while. Now I vacume up after my husband and what we have tracked if from the chickens not so much the dogs. In the beginning we were amazed how well the dogs and chickens got along. Just minding their own business until one day one of the dogs must have done something very unchicken like and they ganged up on both of them. Needless to say they were very intimidated. Now the birds and dogs are never in the yard together unless I am there to supervize. Things are back to normal and quite peacefull.
