whats the best hatchery to order chickens from??

I ordered my chickens from Ideal because they are the only ones who ship small orders for reasonable prices. I would have been fine buying chicks locally, but couldn't find any local sources of the breeds I wanted -- especially since I wanted a mix of breeds but not a random batch of mixed breeds.

For $35 I got 2 Dark Brahma pullets, 2 Delaware pullets, 1 Black Australorp pullet, 1 Black Langshan pullet (who turned out to be a bantam -- must be a mutation because Ideal doesn't carry Langshan bantams), 1 Light Brahma pullet, and 5 Big, Red, Boys -- one of whom should have been a second Light Brahma pullet, the rest are packing peanuts.

They are healthy, vigorous, growing like feathery weeds, and within backyard flock distance of the breeds that I chose for their beauty and their ability to thrive in heat and humidity.

I knew when I placed my order that with sexing being 90% accurate an order of 8 pullets had a fair chance of including a cockerel so I'm not all that upset about the missing Light Brahma pullet -- who, statistically, could well have been a Light Brahma cockerel anyway. And if I don't keep the Langshan (I ordered 8 with the intent to keep 4-6 of them), her being a bantam mutant will make her easier to sell rather than harder.

I would order from Ideal again. It suited my need for healthy, backyard-quality chicks in a quantity that I could handle at a price I could afford.
