What's the best sub in the nest box?

I use a wooden egg that I got at a craft store. It looks so real that I have collected it a few times myself at collection time.

I bought some wooden eggs from one of the hatcheries that look and feel like real eggs. It's actually hard for us to tell sometimes if we are looking at the wooden egg or a real brown egg.

My grandmother always left one real egg in the nest so her hens would go back. She would mark an x on it with a marker so she would know which egg was her nest egg and not accidentally bring it inside (because it obviously was not good to eat after a while.)

Good luck!

Edited to add: Here is a link to the eggs that I use. I see that they have plastic eggs also, but we bought the wooden ones. They are nice. http://www.strombergschickens.com/products/egg_equipment.php

Cracker Barrels Old Country Store has acrylic eggs in brown or white for about a $1.30.

They look really realistic and they are what I'll use once my chicks come of age
