What's the best virus protection for dial up? & some techie help

Hey yall... I've got Norton, but I'm completely frustrated with it & Mircosoft automatic instant updates.

I'm not very computer savvy but I've noticed the amount of bytes received on my end goes up really fast & the amount of bytes sent is lower. For example, I've just got back online & less than 10 minutes, I've got 1,400,000 bytes received & 269,000 sent... computer gets slower the longer I stay on.

I've cleared my history,cookies, scanned for viruses & nothing.
Then the freaking Windows update will start up & stop & start again. I've tired turning off the update thing & Norton sends alerts I need to turn it back on.I really could use some advice.

I would strongly suggest Avast Antivirus (for virus removal and protection), combined with SuperAntiSpyware (to remove and prevent spyware and malware). SuperAntiSpyware catches some spyware that others do not. It sounds as though you may have some spyware or malware infecting your PC.

Both Avast Antivirus and SuperAntiSpyware are free, both are excellent. I can't comment for sure on the performance on dial-up versus high-speed, but I have to believe it would work fine.

I would second what Morning Dove said. AVG is pretty cool. Also try downloading CCleaner. I am on dial up (Oh the joy!) and it took me a long time to download AVG. It was worth it. I also switched from using explorer to using Firefox3. Awesome.
 
We use the free AVG on our computer here at home, and my husband is sysadmin for a secure server in a government-related department so I would guess he probably has made a reasonable choice in this and you might consider it for your own computer. You do need to remember to do the automatic updates on a regular frequent basis, as with any antivirus software.

*Have* you defragmented the hard drive recently?

avg IS the best,, but i have pro, dont know alot about the free version,, i also have zone alarm pro,,, and i have NO problems with either hackers or spyware,,, and if you switch to modzilla instead of internet explorer,, you'll find most of the problems dont even get to ya

Avast stays out of my hair 100%. I really like it, and it's FREE. I also have Ad-Aware; it's free too. TAKE ALLCHOOKUP'S ADVICE!
