Whats the coldest your birds have ever been in?

I think the worst our girls had was 7 degrees plus wind chill.

It's been -7 (add windchill onto that) for the last couple nights here. Brrrr! The chickens were fine. The snow fell on their backs during the day and they walked on the ice. They were fine. They really don't seem to mind.

- 18 here in parts of Ireland and also -26 in parts of UK! We were down to -9F Sounds HOT compaired to some on here.
Our hens were fine and didn;t need any extra heating.

Hey Andythescot,
My girls didn't batt an eye at the 8 degrees we had a couple weeks ago. I have no idea what the wind chills were then. Where in Central MA are you??? I'm in Hudson, we could be neighbors!! What kind of chickens do you have??? I specifically picked hearty breeds since our NE winters can be so fun.....not!! It's a nice one out there today, the girls are out bouncing around in their run picking thru the dry leaves I put in there ystrday to combat the MUD we had w/ our mini thaw. I think I'd rather take some cold over the mud......

FYI - Wind chill is only a factor when it touches the skin . . . so unless the birds were actually exposed to this weather directly then the temp would suffice.

If they were in the coop then 'wind chill' wouldn't apply.

I guess it could be argued that the coop itself would bleed heat quicker at a given temp given strong winds . . . I'm not sure what the calculation would be . . . probably something less than at least one order of magnitude less than wind chill [largely depending on building insulation] . . . we could call it the wind chill thermo evaporative accelerative constant. WCTEAC

The problem with being as techy/geeky as I am is that normal people [like most of you] probably can't tell when my answer begins to evolve into humor.
