whats the deal with silkies?

My kids are in the local 4-H club.. When My Daughter saw them.. well, that was it. we just have the one right now but planning on getting several in the spring. Right now she is my only egg layer and everyone fights over who gets to eat them.. They are small but very tasty.. AND she is the boss of all my other " big " hens... small but mighty..SO to answer your question we show them at fair. and they LOVE to be held and washed and we even blow dry her...

She sounds lovely, that's what I thought I would get with Silkies, if mine was like that I'd be getting loads more!

Thank you Sophie ( thats my Daughters name too) her name is Angel and she lives up to it... Im hoping to get 4 or 5 more in the spring

I'm not sure where you got the information that they don't crow as much as other males. That's simply not true. I have several breeds of chickens here and my Silkie boys are definitely not quieter than my other males.

Other than broodies and such, I also have them for the purpose of food. Silkies are known for their black skin and medicinal value in Asian cultures. The smaller white silkie with dark skin, five toes, and a crest can be sold in some areas for $6-8lb alive, or $8-12 each whole and frozen with head/feet on.

well now thats the kind of info i wanted. I knew there was SOMETHING that made people go nuts.. and that black skin really is awesome when it contrasts with a lighter color - white, buff, blue... maybe ill "get one for my girlfriend" haha..
