I've read that they are the same breed, I've read that they're 2 different things entirely. Anyone here care to elaborate/prosthelytize? How do you tell if your breed is really an Ameraucana or an Easter Egger?

The Ameraucana Breeders Club defines an Easter Egg chicken or Easter Egger as any chicken that possesses the blue egg gene, but doesn’t fully meet any breed descriptions as defined in the APA and/or ABA standards. Further, even if a bird meets an Ameraucana standard breed description, but doesn’t meet a variety description or breed true at least 50% of the time it is considered an Easter Egg chicken.

Well, while I am trying to wait patiently for an answer to my thread, I will give you a short answer. There will be someone along soon to give you a long answer. There are very serious Ameraucana folks here. In fact, there is an Ameraucana thread you may want to visit if you don't get your question answered here.

Hatcheries sell Easter Eggers. These chickens are a crossed breed. They carry the blue egg gene. They are likely crossed (somewhere in their breeding) with a brown egg layer and therefore can lay eggs from cream colored, to pink, pearly, shades of green and even blue. Each chicken only lays one color, however. That is why they call them Easter Eggers. If you had a flock of them, you could have a rainbow of colors to your eggs. They are wonderful birds and are usually friendly. There is an EE thread, too.

The true Ameraucana is sold by breeders perfecting the breed. There are BYCers who are some of those people. They lay light blue eggs only and have muffs and beards.

So that is the short answer. Hope you get the long answer soon.

Where do the APA or ABA list the breed description standards for Ameracaunas? How can hatcheries get by selling EE as Ameracaunas? I purchased several chicks as Ameracaunas that turned out to be EE'ers. They are really good looking birds, but I feel cheated because they are not what I thought I was getting.

The best thing to do is get a copy of the APA Standard of Perfection of $15.00 for the Black and White version...
