You are going to get many different opinions as there are exceptions to every "rule." If I were to get any roosters (I have a D'Anver roo and possibly 4 Silkie roos right now) I would probably get either a Salmon Faverolle, Sussex, or Welsummer roo.
Most of my chicks are very friendly as I handle them and spend at least an hour with them every day. The most outgoing of the bunch are the ones that will fly up onto my arm as soon as they see me and then squat down to be petted. Those are:
- Quail D'Anver cockerel and pullet (10 weeks old)
- Barred Rock pullet (5 weeks old)
- Silver Laced Wyandotte pullet (5 weeks old)
- Black Australorp pullet (5 weeks old)
- Speckled Sussex pullet (5 weeks old)
- Golden Campine pullet (5 weeks old)
If you are planning to get a roo for breeding, you might want to think about the size of the roo in relation to your other chickens. A Bantam size roo might be easier on the hens than a Heavy Breed Large roo.
I have delawares, gold laced wyandottes , silkies and some cute bantams, along with some mixed reds we're waiting to see how they turn out, and like them all - but my first choice would have been Bantam Salmon Faverolles. The roosters are striking, the hens are super cute and from what I've read they are both sexes friendly and approachable.
If you can find some of these birds in your area, definitely consider these for your flock. maybe I'll buy some hatching eggs from you down the road.
I like the ones that look different such as turken necks, Cochins, easter eggers, polish, frizzles and a breed that have really short legs that I have only seen in Mexico.
