Whats the most humane way to kill a chicken?

I would be scared to kill a chicken. My teacher said that when he was feeding his it pecked him so he ran into his house and grabbed his 12 gage and shot it and it went 15 feet in the air and it started flopping in the air splashing blood everywhere. EWWW

Your teacher sounds like a bit of a nutter.

I think who ever has to kill it should be the one to decide. Can you skin a chicken and not mess with the feathers?

I've skinned animals since I was about 12, including skinning birds for taxidermy mounting. Trust me, scalding and plucking is much easier. With skinning a chicken, you're going to waste the wing tips, if not 2/3 of the whole wing.

I have heard (though I have never tried it) that one way to kill a sick chick is to put it in a sealed container with a smaller container of backing soda and vinegar inside, like a volcano experiment. Although, you wouldn't want it to overflow. It takes all the oxygen out of the air, killing the chick. It might be a slow death, and other ways might be more humane. Like I said, I have never tried to do it, but this is what I have heard.

a block of wood and an old fashioned axe. Just make sure your first strike counts. The bird will only suffer for a very short fraction of a second. All other movement if just nerves.
Yeah. A humane death is a quick death.

I could not kill my chickens. Just wasn't raised that way. I understand the need, but I just can't. I'll give them to a hungry family if they get aggressive. I actually don't eat them either. It just bothers me. To each his own.
