What's the Quietest Type of Rooster?....if there is one

Hello everybody!

Recently 4 of my 6 chickens were wiped out by a predator

, and I would like to get some new friends for my 2 survivors. I have always wanted a roo but I live in a place where loud ones are not too welcome...my question: Are there breeds where the roos are quieter than other breeds, or is it just that some roos have louder personalities than others? I have a friend that said her bantam rooster was quieter than a standard roo. Is that true for all bantams? Thanks.

Edit: Oh yeah also I think something no louder than skwaking layers is ok to keep where I live, cause I've been able to keep the layers without too much trouble. Are their any roos that are no louder than the layers?

I have a bantam silkie rooster, and he is even louder than my larger-than-full-sized orpington rooster! If I were you, I would just look around craigslust, and when you find one you like, just ask the seller how loud he is

I have some really quiet roos in the freezer (sorry. I just couldn't help that). All joking aside, my Bantam Cochin Roos are quiet and my Std Cochin Roo. That's not to say that they don't crow, they do. The biggest noise with my flock is the hens squawking when the roos "get friendly" and when they lay. If you live in an area where neighbors complain you may want to reconsider that roo.

I agree with Eastin, my Silkie Roo is a little devil, if he's not making noise, he's causing it.

I thought it was most likely a personality thing but since I've never had a rooster, I thought I'd find out for sure. What I will probably do is just get some straight run chickens and then see if the roosters I get are quiet enough for me. If they are too loud, I know places where I can get rid of them without the risk of them being eaten. Thanks for the info!

Bantam Cochin roos make less noise of any roos I have ever raised. They rarely crow and when they do its not very loud at all.

OK I know these are rare birds, but how about Bantam black sumatra roos? or phoenix birds? I mainly want a roo with a looong flowing beautiful tail.

I love my black sumatra roos. they are only 13 weeks old, but they crow very infrequently, and when they do crow, they are quieter than roos 3 properties away, and they crow all day. I'm supposing mine will get louder and more frequent as time goes on, and I hate thinking about placing them in the freezer because they are so beautiful.​

There is no quiet breed. If there was, you'd see tons of suburb/urban chicken owners snatching them up. Each rooster has their own personality. That said, roosters will crow more often when disturbed or irritated. Some will crow all hours throughout the day and/or night, others will scarcely make a sound.

Just for a brief and somewhat biased example, having owned two Silkies, my first was a loud crower that never shut up. He also had the most grusome, ugliest crow I'd ever heard. My guy now doesn't crow often at all. And his crow is slightly muted, at that, through his thin coop doors.

It's an individual factor that decides who is loud and who is not. Many poultry owners have differing experiences, some positive and some not. You'll get mixed answers on various breeds.

P.S.-Banties tend to have high-pitched crows, especially the smaller ones. Whether or not you'd consider that 'louder' is up to you. I think, personally, that a large fowl roo has the same impact of sound, even if they are deeper-voiced. Noise is noise.

Perfect! You need a Yokohama. Long tail, & they sound kinda hoarse when they crow. I am about 75 yards from the barn & can barely hear them.
