o hot i had to give my hen's crushed ice so they wouldn't lay hard boiled egg's...lol

Centerville, Tenn.. 50 miles west of Nashville, is very hot.. the spring rains do not help anymore..the ground is hard as cement. a downpour leaves us still dry and hard.
To step out the door takes a brave person. The heat will hit you in the face and make you forget why you started out in the first place. I feel so sorry for my young chickens they are in a penn and cant get to the green grass in the shady places. Ive put u p as much shade as I can without spending lots of money.
Ill be so glad when i can let them out to free range. The nice shade around the fence and under the trees will be wonderful for them.
I have a hard time keeping their water cool. its shaded of course in the penn but it gets warm fast.
I dont know h ow much longer i can afford this life of chickens and so.. the few dollars the eggs bring in does not touch t he feed bill. Ive never broke even.. not one time.
Im gonna have to understand, i guess that they are chickens.. they do not have human thoughst and they do not have human emotions.. they would eat my eyes out in a second if i did not feed them... I gave them human emotions the first time i saw a new hatched chick, and that makes me spend money and time and energy on an animal that could eat bugs and s urvive in the 20 or so acres they ahve to run in. They dont need the treats and the medicine and the housing that I think they have to have.. its for me and my spoiled self.. I feed myself when i give them the treats and I house myself when I build more than is necessary and I love myself when Im cooing to a chicken who has an iq of maybe 3 .... So what am I saving by spending more on the chickens than I do on my grand children... jdy
id put air conditioning out there if given a chance...

I have probably lost a few pounds just typing this outside its probably 92 but its cooled off because the rain is coming. The spring was good to us here and the ground was not to hard the grass is all still green. The hens are free ranging not moving to much though because of the heat. Their is ice in their water and I am looking for another fan to put outside. its hard to believe it was 65 two weeks ago  . Where did spring go? its feels like august now! I am just worried about the hens when I am up in Vermont at language camp who will take care of them in this disgusting heat and humidity That baltimore it well known for? after all 16 years of my life living hear you would think I would be used to it. But I am not I wish it were still the old nice cool historical baltimore. Tommarow it is supposed to cool of after this rain

I just pray we keep getting rain and it cools of everyfew days or the garden and chickens may pass away. I am even buying a new coop for $800 to put in the shade and protect the hens from the weather here

In Ct nearly 100 and humid. I hear weather will break tonite with boomers and hail.:thun Glad I am inside with the A.C. Chickens are in the shade with fresh iced water.

Cold and windy. I have the heat on and I'm wearing my coat outside. It's been raining off and on too. This is fine with me, my meat birds get processed on Saturday and seem to do better when the temps stay below 65.
