What's to old to neuter a goat??

You need to have your vet do it NOW.Its good weather,And the bugs arent out. That mean lower chance of infection. My(avatar) guy bled alot and didnt like me after we did it LOL

A large animal vet should be able to do it without knocking him out. $100 is crazy money for as quick and easy as it can be done.

I cannot believe you people..

some of you cringe at the thought of caponizing a chicken and then have no second thoughts about banding a goat..

crimp him yourself and forget it..

he is only a year old,,

what do you think the vet is going to do??

and you will still be the one who has to nurse the goat afterwards,
either way..

I have the crimper and I was going to tackle it that way but thought I'd get second/third opinions from you guys.....

I also got some rescue remedy for animals to see if that would calm him down a bit for the crimping....

I have some tranqulizers that the vet gave me for the dogs when I bring them in... could I use those as well??

I think he's too old to use a burdizzo. He'll most likely need surgical castration, but in this area they are not generally anesthetized to do it.

I think the stress of giving him the rescue remedy would probably outweigh the benefits! Call your vet about the dog medication before you go anywhere near your goat with it.

He is too old to band. This must be done surgically. At 4-8 weeks we usually band our males. Any older than that we neuter surgically. If you have three females and he breeds them and you have any female babies in 6 months he will breed them too. They are like rabbits when it comes to fertility !!! Get it done ASAP.

That's the key, finding a true large animal vet rather than a 'pet' vet. They are so much more reasonable price wise for treating any animal, as they know many of their customers are on a limited budget/profit margin. I don't think our large animal vet charges $100 to geld a horse, much less castrate a goat.
