We have a Dominique that has been in our flock for 2 years now. She has been making a funny, almost raspy sound from her throat for a few seconds, and than she goes for an hour or so before she does it again......been doing this for almost a week now. She is eating/drinking fine, laid an egg yesterday, doesn't have any nasal/eye discharge, doesn't have any "smell" about her.......so what's up?

We just moved them to the new coop last week and it has a dirt floor and I've noticed that it is a bit dusty, even though there is more than sufficient ventilation. Could this be the culprit? She is the only that is displaying anything abnormal.

So what should I be doing to help her?

Thanks always for your help!!

I would do something to keep the dust down. Use kiln dries wood shaving from the feed store. You want some sort of litter down anyway so you can easily rake it up when you clean the coop. You could also mist with water.

She is two years old. Has she ever been wormed? Could she have gapeworm? It's a horrible parasite that lives in the chickens windpipe and as it grows it suffocates the chicken. The symptoms include funny noise breathing, shaking head back and forth to to and dislodge the worm and stretching of the neck and opening the mouth like yawning.

nope, never been wormed......what do you girls recommend?

Thanks as always.

We are getting the wood bedding tomorrow to put down in the new coop. This is what we used in the other coop, where the banties now reside, along with stall dry.

...i totally was on a brain duh there. i shoulda' known the weather. i was wondering if Wilma had a dampness gurgle going on. sometimes when they get into damp conditions they'll get a gurgle. not atypical here in Michigan in the early spring and early fall.

i'm thinking not wet enough yet around here.

and yeah, get yer booty over to this side of Michigan. what they heck, it's not like we all have cooties ya know...

So if it's gapeworm, what do you guys recommend for treatment? I've been browsing and there are lots of opinions.....what have you girls used that took care of it?
