What's with the Chicken Addiction?

You hit the nail on the head! I definitely feel like a chicken weirdo too. I have chicks about the same age and love going into the coop and sitting with them, and looking at their combs and wattles for growth and color change, and hand feeding treats to them. I even saw my husband pulling weeds and throwing them into the coop for fresh greens. Apparently chicken weirdness is contagious,

Yeah, you know it is when instead of the expected Ugh when you tell him you're picking up more chicks is "Really, what kind?" HAHAHA ;-)

Glad you joined us! I joined BYC so I'll have other addicts to chat chickens with and 3 years and 24 000 posts later I guess you can say I'm addicted to BYC now as well? It's a lovely community and you'll have fun here. We never get tired of talking chickens!

5 years on and im still obsessed... :p

My hens generally seem to like it when i stroke/scratch the backs of their necks with a finger, think it feels like when they preen themselves or something. My hens are more a fan of hugs and sitting on shoulders tho :)

We live on a farm with cows, pigs, goats, dogs and cats. And now chickens. The goats are cute and the pigs are friendly, but for some reason the chickens just draw me to them. I've wanted them for years but hubs always had an excuse to wait. I finally just did it. I have 12 6 week olds that moved home to our new coop on Saturday. I also have 14 3 week olds in a brooder in the basement.

I've been sitting with each group as much as I can. I was surprised last night when one of my 2 black australorps (older group) decided she wanted to sit on my lap. She had been curious about me while I was sitting near their feed trough just watching them. She jumped up on top of the trough (which is difficult because it is a rounded top) right next to me then let me move her to my lap. she sat there and chirped while i stroked her back. She is SOOO soft! It was so calming, which is definitely what I've needed lately with all the stuff stressing me out lately.

I'm hooked!

Btw, where do chickens like to be pet? My cockatiels used to like their necks scratched but my chickens could care less.

I'd heard that they prefer to be petted on their chest because touching them from above triggers a predator response...I think that's the right terminology. It seems to be true for most of mine.

I thought I was nuts when one of my pullets likes to get on my shoulder. Even my dad just looks at me like yeah whatever. Lol.

My family used to think I was nuts when I would let my chicks run around the house when it was 102 degrees outside, and when I would let them sit on my lap, ect. but now even my extended family has caught the chicken bug!
