Ok, I checked & rechecked - they all have single combs for sure
.
Ravynscroft's explanation fits = the ground was dried mud & from what I saw plus they not knowing what a feeder is, thinking he just tossed feed (?) or scrapes on the ground. I should have walked away but I had to "rescue" some, he said he had 40 - 50, there was alot running around.
I haven't tried removing the caked dirt on their heads, trying to figure out if a warm wet cloth with gentle rubbing/dabbing or try brushing with a damp toothbrush or just letting it go, hoping it comes off?
I spent part of the afternoon in the "chick" tractor with them, didn't see them picking on each others face/feathers at all & not so much scratching of the head/face. They now know what the feeder is for & teaching them the water nipple. They are SO SWEET, I'm learning how to tell them apart by the difference in color shade. They're adjusting & think alot happier

It just bothers me thinking about the rest

Really appreciate ALL of your input and help
