I have a standard Cochin Rooster who is approx. a yr old. I've had him since he was a few months old. He is in a pen with ten other chickens, none of which are presenting with the same problem. I noticed he was starting to limp a little. I checked his feet and the only thing I saw that was unusual was that he was missing some toe nails. Lately the limping is getting worse and he's lost more toe nails. The few nails he has left are really small and thin. I also noticed that lately his legs are starting to turn red on the backs of them. I don't see any bumblefoot going on and I dont' see any bugs crawling. He's acting normally, besided the seemingly painful legs. He's still performing his roosterly duties.
HIs missing toenails:

That looks like severe case of scaley mite. You can cure this fairley easy but you have to be diligent..you need to put vaseline or a thick oil like mineral oil on thier legs right up into the feathered legs for as long as it takes ..the mites become smothered in the oil and die..you can usually tell by the raised scales on the foot and it can disfigure the foot eventually and it is painful to them so the sooner the better look it up on the internet SCALEY MITE TREATMENT...A simple oil works as well as any fancy drug treatment...we had this many years ago and treatment like this stopped it and it never returned.good idea to change bedding and clean house real well as I think they will live in the premisis for a while while treating. see also scaley face mites. You need to treat each of them otherwise they will just spread it back and forth.. You can do it when they roost at night , less stress for all, just reach under them while talking softly and use your hands to rub oil in..This will take a while to clear up due to the severity of it, but your bird will feel tremendous releif within 2 weeks even in the first week they will start to feel better...I actually oil our birds legs in spring and fall on the roost just as a precaution.. These can be carried in on wild birds so once cleared up, keep watch out for it and maybe use oil as a precaution like we do.. might want to use a light baby oil on face careful around eye.

Do research it and ask for pictures in your search to see extream case and treatment

here is a site with a pic of a robin with severe scaley mite looks exactly like yours and this bird is bleeding from it.

Anybody else agree? Not to discredit what you've said, I just want a second opinion in case I treat for mites and it doesn't work. I'd like a backup plan.

Anyone else???? His toes don't look skinny like those pics. His toes look swollen at the nails. His feet were dirty too giving him that greyish color.

The first and 3rd picture cause me to agree with aveca. I would start treatment for scaly leg mites. Really....it can't hurt, so if you do find that its another problem you might have wasted some time but you wouldn't have done any damage. The vasaline/oil will probably feel good on his legs.

Edited to add: I would soak the feet clean first, just in case there is something else you're not seeing through the dirt.
