Hi guys,

I have 2 chickens a magpie and a sussex. A few months ago my sussex breed chicken started to get a bare patch around its bum. The patch of skin now looks red and sore and is spreading up its body. The other chicken is perfectly healthy with no bare patches. It seems happy enough and still eats and lays eggs.

I'm not sure what to do!

Any help much appreciated!

is she molting? I'd increase the protein level in her food to help her grow the feathers back. she could be rubbing them off on the nest or eating them. or being plucked by someone else. check her for bugs and make sure that's not what's causing this. I came across a great little product you might want to give a try. the product treats the raw skin and STOPS the feather picking. it has tea tree oil in it for the irritated skin and its purple to cover blood. this little product REALLY works great to stop the feather picking or eating or plucking. its called Rooster Booster Peck No More. just put it on the raw area and they WILL leave the area alone! it really works great! I use it a lot! this should give her a chance to regrow her feathers without plucking them out. no one will pick on the area with this lotion on. trust me they hate the smell and taste of this stuff so much they won't bother the area. giving it a chance to regrow the feathers!! along with a increase in protein and I think this will help. I was having a problem with my oldest pullet pecking on my youngest. well I applied that lotion to there backs and she pecked ONCE that was it! it worked so well she stopped pecking them all together and I don't have to use it now. same goes for if they get a sore or area they need to leave alone I put on the lotion and they don't bother the area again! the product is sold at feed stores for about 8 dollars! I was so surprised on how well it works! I'd put that on her bottom and increase protein and it should allow her feathers to regrow in that area. not sure exactly how or why she's losing them. could be a number of things. check her nest and see if its rubbing on her. if your NOT finding her feathers that means they are likely being eaten. the increase protein will stop this. its pretty common. I'd give the lotion a try with the protein increase and she should grow them back without a problem. I really hope this is helpful to you and wish you the best! good luck!
