I have two flocks. The older flock pecks and picks at each other incessantly. The other does not at all.
Yesterday I saw one of the bullies come up behind another bully/picky bird, and she pecked in an area of the other's back that elicited a squat. Once she had the other bird squatting, she proceeded to pick feathers on the back of the squatting bird, despite the squatter squawking at her. I had not seen this behavior before, but now that I have, I made sure the picker got another set of pinless peepers on. I think this type of thing happens all the time. We just aren't there at the right time to see it.

Yep. I did see this once several weeks back. Same as you describe. Freda squatting while Alma pecked her head. Crazy chickens!​

my hen has the same problem. my silver dorking just beats her up. i've seperated them and the redness has seemed to calm down. I would try to seperate her from all other chickens because as soon as another chicken see's that she has something ''different'' or ''wrong'' with her, they will start to peck. I've seen mine do it even while on the roost.
